The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
