Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
